Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN THE FIRST THREE SESSIONS?

The first three to four sessions will be used to explore your concerns in the context of your life. This is referred to as the clinical assessment phase and is used for therapy planning. The assessment phase ensures that the therapy phase will move as smoothly, as quickly and as successfully as possible

HOW LONG WILL THE THERAPY PROCESS TAKE?

The length of psychotherapy can vary depending on the type of therapy, the individual's specific needs and goals, and the frequency of sessions. Some types of therapy, such as short-term or solution-focused therapy, may only take a few weeks or months. Other forms of therapy, such as long-term psychodynamic therapy or schema-focused therapy, may take several months or even years.

On average, most people attend therapy for about 12 to 20 sessions, but it can be more or less. The therapist will assess the progress of the therapy and adjust the length accordingly. The frequency of sessions also varies, it could be once a week, twice a week, or even less frequent depending on the individual's needs and preferences.

It's important to note that the length of therapy is not the only important factor in determining its effectiveness. The quality of the therapy and the therapist-patient relationship are also crucial. Additionally, the therapy is not a one-time fix, it is a process that requires commitment and willingness to change.

It's also important to keep in mind that some people may require ongoing therapy as part of their mental health maintenance, while others may only need therapy for a specific period of time.

WILL MY MEDICAL AID COVER THE COST OF SESSIONS?

It is always advised that you confirm with your medical aid what your annual benefit for psychological services is.
